Events in the life and career of NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith:


1969: Emmitt James Smith III was born in Pensacola, Fla. on May 15, the second child of Mary and Emmitt Smith, Jr., weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces.

1977: Scores 70-yard touchdown on first snap in first youth league game, playing for Salvation Army.

1983: Records first 100-yard rushing game for Pensacola Escambia High School, with 115 yards vs. Pensacola Catholic.

1986: Named High School Player of the Year by USA TODAY and Parade magazine. Represents nation's prep football players at the White House as part of "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign.

1987: As freshman at University of Florida, surpasses 1,000-yard rushing mark in seventh game - faster than any player in college football history.

1989: Ends college career with 58 school records.

1990: Selected by Dallas Cowboys (news) with first-round pick in NFL draft. Notched first NFL 100-yard rushing game vs. Tampa Bay (Oct. 7). Named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and became first Cowboys player named to Pro Bowl since Herschel Walker in 1988.

1991: Won first NFL rushing title with 1,538 yards, the youngest player (22) to win the rushing crown.

1992: Set Cowboys record and won NFL rushing title with 1,713 yards. Capped season with first NFL title, rushing for 108 yards vs. Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVII.

1993: Became fourth player in NFL history to win three consecutive rushing titles (Earl Campbell, Jim Brown and Steve Van Buren were the others), with 1,486 yards. Captured league's MVP award and Super Bowl XXVIII MVP honors (Jan. 30, 1994) with 132 yards in victory vs. Buffalo.

1995: Set NFL single-season record with 25 rushing touchdowns, won fourth league rushing title (1,773 yards). Capped season with third NFL championship, rushing for 49 yards vs. Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX.

1996: Notched 100th career rushing touchdown, topped 10,000 career rushing yards. Earned degree in Public Recreation from University of Florida.

1998: Became Cowboys' all-time leading rusher, surpassing Tony Dorsett (12,036 yards). Became NFL's all-time rushing TD leader, passing Marcus Allen's 123.

1999: Became NFL's all-time leader in career postseason rushing yards (1,586) and postseason rushing touchdowns (19).

2000: Surpassed 15,000 career rushing yards. Married Patricia Lawrence.

2001: Surpassed Barry Sanders (15,269 yards) for No. 2 spot on NFL's all-time rushing list. Finished season with record 11th 1,000-yard rushing season in a row.

<>2002: Son Emmitt James Smith IV born on May 15, Smith's 33rd birthday. Appointed to President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Received Congressional Black Caucus (news - web sites) Award for leadership and public service. Breaks NFL rushing record previously held by Walter Payton. Finishes season with 17,162 career yards.

2003: Released by the Dallas Cowboys.

March 26, 2003: Signs with Arizona Cardinals (news).

Jan. 2, 2005: Completes second season in Arizona with 937 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
